*e2068 Hamilton, George |
A Treatise on Myles’s Side-Nail System of Shoeing Horses |
Being a Paper read before the Philosophical Society by Geo Hamilton, Esq., J.P. (Adelaide: Frearson and Bro.: 1877) Wrappers (that is, paper covers) plus pp. 27 plus 3 plates WITH the 4-page ‘Appendix to the Treatise on Myles’s Side-Nail System of Shoeing Horses’, 1878. A rarity, with the illustrated Appendix (an even greater rarity) separately published the following year and here stitched within the original wrappers. A most interesting association copy. The front wrapper of the Treatise bears the following inscription: ‘To be perused, entered in the Government Property list and carefully preserved 17-5-77 [signed] William Cearns (?) C.I.M.P.’ The Appendix bears the same signature and reads: ‘Forwarded to Corporal Dawe To be carefully gummed to the Treatise’. Hamilton’s publication reveals his deep concern for the well-being of horses, a concern no doubt shared by many of the Mounted Police of the day, whose very lives depended on the quality of their mounts. At some stage the upper corner of the front wrapper was excised, and on the title page beneath, ‘Kingston Police Station’ has been written in a different (and less sophisticated) hand. Official blind stamp to front wrapper. Wrappers worn at spine, with scattered stains and foxing; edges, title and preface pages of the treatise foxed; appendix foxed. Otherwise a good copy. |
