From the library of Kathleen Mellor, Australian pre-school educator, with her signature, K.M. Mellor, on the front free endpaper of each volume. Presumably Kathleen Mellor derived more than simply pleasure from the work of highly esteemed picture-book writer and illustrator Lois Lenski, for from 1945 she was pioneering a series of her own for Australian kindergarten children. (She expressed gratitude for the enthusiasm of another American, Christine Heinig, Federal Officer of the Australian Pre-School Association, in encouraging the publication of her own stylish books, which started out as manuscripts in the library corner of the Lady Gowrie Child Centre.) ‘Davy’s Day’, ‘Spring is Here’ and ‘Surprise for Davy’ are a little soiled on their cloths and rubbed at their extremities; only ‘Davy’s Day’ is without a jacket; the dust-jackets are worn, chipped and repaired but largely present; altogether a good to very good group of Lenski picture books from the 1940s from the collection of an Australian children’s author of note.
