Passed by Censor', numbers 2-4 are printed as 'Registered as a Newspaper at Father Neptune's Court' and as 'A paper printed out at sea /To wile an hour for you and me'. While generally light-hearted, with plenty of examples of quotable, peculiarly Australian humour and preoccupation with sporting results, the magazine makes very clear the appalling behaviour of troops on leave at ports of call, 'the uncontrolled, mad drinking' which is 'taken as a national characteristic'. Loosely included is a small snapshot (image 60 x 36 mm), inscribed in pencil on its verso 'Gordon Gray' - 'Jim and I (?) on the old Borda A.30'. The 'Lunatic Ship' is named the A30 on page 4 of No. 4. Also included is 'Eightieth Anniversary. Proclamation Day South Australia, 28th Dec. 1836-1916: Toast List' subscribed H.M.A.T. 'Borda', North Atlantic, 2.30 p.m., 28th Dec., 1916., as well as a page of pencilled diary notes upon arrival in London - unsigned and of no particular significance. Generally condition is good; the issues have been folded horizontally and/or vertically; there are a few marginal short tears. Page 3/4 of number 3 is torn in half horizontally and has signs of use but is complete.

With a Foreword by General Sir Harry Chauvel, G.C.M.G., K.C.B., Late Commanding the Desert Mounted Corps. (Sydney: Angus and Robertson: 1944) Thirteenth Edition*. Cloth (that is, hard covers) pp. x, 346. Glossary. The dust-jacket of the silhouetted column against the pyramids has at the foot of its front panel ‘Twelfth Edition’*, suggesting that this edition was printed without a change to the jacket from the previous edition. Spine a little slanted; at the leading edges the cloth is discoloured from damp, a discoloration which has lightly affected the fixed endpapers; still a very good copy in good dust-jacket which is worn at the head and foot of its spine and along the folds, most noticeably to the front flap fold.

Preces and Exercises
(no place: no imprint) Five volumes of roneoed or otherwise duplicated material concerning ‘Allied Land Forces in SWPA Mar 1942 to Aug 1945’. Volume 1 has the cover and inner title of ‘Official Records’. On Vol. 1 page 1 is a brief summary of the contents of each volume: Vol 1: Introduction. Preces: Staff Duties. Intelligence. Vol. 2 Preces: Japanese Army Organisation. Amphibious Warfare. Organisation and Tactics. Map Reading, Field Sketching and Direction Finding. Air Photograph Interpretation. Vol. 3 ‘A’ Wing Appreciations and Exercises. Vol. 4 ‘A’ Wing Exercises. ‘B’ Wing Exercises Complete. ‘C’ Wing Complete. Vol. 5 ‘D’ Wing – Preces and Exercises Complete: Field Security Course; Enemy Equipment Course. Malay Language Course. A complete Table of Contents prefaces each volume. The introduction of Colonel E. Mander-Jones, Deputy Director of Military Intelligence, elucidates the rationale behind the production of this compilation – namely, the need for an historical record of the activities of the School and at the same time the need to provide aid in the ‘conduct of Intelligence courses in the post-war army and …[to] form a basis on which the School may be started again with a minimum of difficulty if ever the need arises’. In this massive compilation (the foolscap sheets approx 340 x 210 mm and, including covers, extending to approx 260 mm along a shelf) are included numerous charts, diagrams maps and tables, furnishing insights into the war as it was being waged. In Vol. 2, among the most interesting folding insert is a large folding illustration of ‘Japanese Landing Craft’ showing ten such craft, listing the characteristics of each and what Intelligence believes to be the role and capacity of each. Mander-Jones’s own copy which was presumably used in work with the Adelaide University Regiment, the stamp of which appears on the verso of the front board of Vol. 1. A little marginal silverfishing to a few leaves and some fraying to leading edges; generally in very good to near fine order.

(Adelaide: W.K. Thomas: 1919) [Fourth Edition]. Half leather (that is, hard covers) pp. viii, 131 (214 x 140 mm). Illustrated. Folding map. A cancelled ex-Institute library copy, presumably bound by the library in half leather, lettered in gilt, without the original wrappers on which the words ‘Fourth Edition’ would presumably have appeared, as this copy corresponds to that edition on all points – the February and March 1919 testimonials and the difference in pagination, indicative of the type being reset and the illustrations being included in the pagination. Incidentally, this edition has paper superior to earlier editions in which the paper tends to tan – this stock is art paper which has retained its whiteness. Leather damaged at head of spine and worn at its foot and at the corners of the boards; cloth flecked and boards a little canted; institute pastedowns on front fixed endpaper and rear board, and a few marginal stamps within, and two date stamps to rear fixed endpaper; a little wrinkling to the leading edge of the early leaves; still a good copy.
